Workforce Investment Boards

  • Southwest Corner Workforce Investment Board was created in 1999 as a result of the Workforce Investment Act, a major piece of legislation that overhauled the nation's federally-funded employment and training programs. Board members, appointed by the commissioners of Washington, Greene and Beaver counties in southwestern Pennsylvania, represent employers, educational institutions and training providers, community based organizations, organized labor, and government.

  • Tri-County Workforce Investment Board, in the areas of Butler, Armstrong, and Indiana Counties, the local Board of County Commissioners established a Workforce Investment Board (WIB) that will implement the Workforce Investment Act. The Board's mandate is to provide key policy decisions affecting the local workforce development system, and to identify and certify One-Stop Career Centers in the three-county area. The local elected officials appointed high-level individuals to serve o­n the WIB, reflecting their recognition that workforce development is a top priority and a key to the long-range economic vitality of the three counties.

  • West Central Workforce Investment Area consists of Lawrence and Mercer Counties in Western Pennsylvania and is one of 23 WIAs across the Commonwealth. With direct access to the major interstate highways 80, 79, 76 and 376, we are less than 100 miles from Pittsburgh and Cleveland and within a 400 mile radius of Buffalo, Detroit, Baltimore, Columbus, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, New York City, Chicago, Rochester, Toronto and Washington D.C. Incorporating the best of both rural and urban settings, the area boasts an adaptive and cost-effective workforce; a diverse labor pool with diverse skill sets and a nationally recognized work ethic.

  • Westmoreland-Fayette Workforce Investment Board, Westmoreland and Fayette counties comprise the Westmoreland-Fayette Workforce Investment Area. Combined, the two counties encompass 1,812 square miles and have a population of 518,637, according to the 2000 U.S. Census.

National Agencies

  • National Association of Workforce Boards (NAWB) is the leading workforce association that represents the nation's nearly 650 business-led Workforce Investment Boards (WIBs) and also serves other associated organizations in the workforce industry with one common goal: Helping America Work.

    NAWB supports members through a comprehensive program of advocacy, training and technical assistance, communication, and the promotion of strategic partnerships for the advancement of our nation's workforce.

  • National Association of State Workforce Agencies is an organization of state administrators of unemployment insurance laws, employment services, training programs, employment statistics and labor market information and other programs and services provided through publicly-funded state workforce systems.

  • The United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) is the official nonpartisan organization of cities with populations of 30,000 or more. There are 1,201 such cities in the country today. Each city is represented in the Conference by its chief elected official, the mayor.

  • United States Department of Labor Employment & Training Administration administers federal government job training and worker dislocation programs, federal grants to states for public employment service programs, and unemployment insurance benefits. These services are primarily provided through state and local workforce development systems.

State Agencies

  • The Center for Workforce Information and Analysis, in the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, publishes labor market data by county and workforce investment area.

  • Pennsylvania Association of Workforce Investment Boards is the state association of workforce investment boards.

  • Pennsylvania Partners represents workforce development professionals in each of the state's 23 Workforce Investment Areas. Our members oversee and operate employment and training programs administered under the federal Workforce Investment Act and other workforce programs, including the services provided by Pennsylvania's CareerLink (one-stop) system.

  • Pennsylvania Workforce Development is the home of Workforce Development in Pennsylvania! The Web site will help visitors easily find the resources they need to work and do business in Pennsylvania.

  • Pennsylvania Workforce Investment Board (PA WIB) is Governor Rendell's principal private sector policy advisor on building a strong workforce development system that is aligned with state education policies and economic development goals. All of its members are appointed by the Governor and represent a diverse cross section of business executives, labor officials, education leaders, economic development practitioners and local elected officials. In addition, the cabinet secretaries of five state agencies as well as four members of the legislature serve on the board.
