Jobs service offers transportation help
TRIBUNE-REVIEW Tuesday, August 12, 2003 People looking for jobs and employers looking for
workers will have a new place to get together starting today in the
airport corridor.
Allegheny West CareerLink and the Airport Corridor Transportation Association will mark the grand opening of the Airport Corridor Connection at 9 a.m. outside the center near the U.S. Post Office in Robinson Town Centre. Tours of the new facility begin at 10 a.m. The center is the 14th CareerLink location in the county and is the only location statewide also offering transportation services, including car and van pool information, bus passes and tickets and detour and construction information, said Nicole Pazur, a CareerLink marketing communications specialist. "This is an experiment ... to see how the two services can function together and hopefully provide a better service to people," said Lynn Manion, executive director of the Airport Corridor Transportation Association. The center opened as a rapid response center to help laid-off airline workers, serving more than 3,000 people in its first year, Pazur said. The center now is being expanded to help other job seekers. "The airport corridor is continually growing, new businesses are opening and businesses are building new locations," Pazur said. "There's a real need for a service link to be able to link employers to job seekers and job seekers to employers and to get employees to and from work." The center offers most of its services, including employer job postings and worker job searches, for free. Job seekers can search for work opportunities and get career counseling and help writing resumes. Employers can post jobs online for free, get personalized help from staff and can recruit on-site. "We're focusing on being of assistance to employers in the corridor," Manion said. "Because of where we're located, we thought our match is better with employers. We will provide any workforce-type service to employers." With nearly 50,000 job seekers enrolled, CareerLink claims to be the largest single source of workers in the region. In the past two years, more than 2,000 Western Pennsylvania businesses have listed more than 20,000 jobs.
