The February Executive Committee meeting of Three Rivers Workforce Investment Board has changed. The meeting will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 22 at TRWIB offices, 425 Sixth Avenue, Suite 650, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.

Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Youth Services

On behalf of the Allegheny County Executive and Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh, the Three Rivers Workforce Investment Board (TRWIB) is announcing the release of Workforce Investement Act (WIA) funding to organizations interested in providing youth workforce development services to Allegheny County and City of Pittsburgh youth ages 14-21.

The New York Times recently profiled a renegade New York Applebee's franchise owner who talked about opening restaurants and hiring in tough neighborhoods. In the piece, the businessman mentions that if someone comes to an interview dressed inappropriately, a recruiter will give them the chance to leave and return dressed in proper attire.

TRWIB goes underground

In tall buildings or deep underground, it’s the TRWIB Team to the labor market rescue! For their annual employee outing, the staff of the TRWIB took a tour of the Tour-Ed Mine, in Tarentum, PA, to get an informed, historical perspective on mining in Pennsylvania through the decades. The coal mine, which closed in the late 60s, is now open for tours guided by experienced miners.

Jobs available … to those employed

Doing labor supply-demand research involves, among other things, scanning job boards and store fronts for job openings. While I mostly try to capture the trends and confirm the known (i.e. there are jobs out there), sometimes I actually read the job postings. And I noticed that we went from pre-recession "Hiring Now", "Workers Needed" and "Apply Within" through more specific requests during the recession (e.g. "Nurses Needed" and "Accountants Wanted") to a new hiring mode.
